What is the Ambassadorial Role of Board Leadership?

Our focus this quarter is on board governance topics, to align with our upcoming webinars (click here to learn more) in which we will be amplifying the ways in which board members can be awesome! As a current board member, I can tell you that I always need reminders about how I can be and do better for my organization.

One of the key areas of responsibility, often overlooked by board leaders, is the expectation of outreach and advocacy. As business leaders, community volunteers, industry professionals, and clients/stakeholders we have the passion, the connections, and the respect needed to speak up on behalf of our organizations!

We call this “being an ambassador”. The definition of an ambassador is a person who acts as a representative or promoter of a specified activity. What does it look like to be an ambassador? We believe that Board members have the responsibility to:

  • Cultivate and steward prospective donors

  • Connect community partners

  • Invite community members to serve the nonprofit

  • Promote the organization’s services

  • Advocate for the cause

Most board members are aware of their fundraising responsibilities, but are less aware of their outreach responsibilities (likely not discussed regularly at board meetings). And why not? It’s the best part! In our upcoming webinar, we will explore how board leaders can amplify their organization’s reach and become messengers for the cause. Who better to perform outreach in the community and spread the message about the good work an organization is doing, than board members? This encompasses everything from posting on social media, public speaking, meeting with donors, and making connections with key stakeholders and funders.
